Beginnings

“Soon after Leland was founded as a town, a newspaper was started to keep the community informed on current events around the world. Finding any information on the earliest papers proved to be very difficult. Although there were brief articles in the Greenville paper in 1888 credited to the Leland Record and in 1889 credited to the Leland Times, the first Leland paper about which any information has been located is the Leland Enterprise which was founded by J.T.D. Kinnison in 1897. This paper was printed by the Democrat Times of Greenville.

The next record found was of Frank Grego and Joe Cinnegar who published the Leland Enterprise in 1900. They printed it in Vicksburg until a small press was moved to Leland. The next mention of the Enterprise was found in 1904 when Mayor E.W. Taylor bought a newspaper in Greenwood, resigned as mayor, and sold the Enterprise to A.J. Hill and William G. Hanson. The first issue published by Hill and Hanson on August 6,1904 is the earliest issue preserved at the newspaper office.

The Leland Enterprise went out of print during World War II, and was reinstated on June 1, 1944, when W.R. Wilkins published the first issue of the Leland Progress (he had bought the Leland Enterprise and renamed it).”
